Fired Up - The World Needs more Ironing Boards
October 31, 2022
What happens when you focus on owning your true self? Magic happens when you accept who and what you are, and use your gifts to bless everyone around you. Listen to Gabriela Brunner of The New Firm as she reminds us how the world needs us for what we are and not for who we think we should be. If you ever find yourself questioning your worth, then this episode is for you.

Not only am I really hyper right now because I had a ton of coffee, but I'm really fired up about something. I know it's intended to be funny, and I get the joke, but I wanted to share something with you. So someone shared one of those things called meme memes those images right on Facebook that said an ironing board is a surfboard that gave up on its dreams and got a boring job. Don't be an ironing board. And it's I was thinking about that.
[00:00:44.500] - Gabriela Brunner
I was like, no, the world needs ironing boards. The world needs ironing boards. We actually probably need ironing boards more than we need surfboards. But the point is this, and this is actually something that as a career transition coach, it really gets me. It's that we create this idea of what we should be in life, and that could be anything a surfboard, an ironing board.
[00:01:09.050] - Gabriela Brunner
And then we make people feel bad when we say, don't be an ironing board, be a surfboard. And the point is that the world needs both. The world needs CEOs, the world needs baristas. The world needs all kinds of people. And so if the point isn't to everybody become a surfboard because that's cool or that's better or that's a more fun job than being an ironing board, the miracle of life, the beauty of life, is that we can all be who we are meant to be.
[00:01:41.860] - Gabriela Brunner
And that's the single most important task that we can come up with that we can figure out. And so the moment that we start forgetting who we are and the moment that we stop being an ironing board, if that's what we're meant to be, that's when we give up on ourselves. That's when we basically just throw in the towel. Because living an inauthentic life, a not authentic life, it's better maybe potentially, to just not have that life at all. I mean, that sounds a little dramatic.
[00:02:09.960] - Gabriela Brunner
I don't like how I said that. What I'm trying to say is simply that I really encourage you to be exactly who you are meant to be. And I just love the fact that if you take some time for yourself and make it a priority to figure out who you are, to identify the things that light you up, even if that is being a, quote, surfboard. Oh, look what I said. Ironing board.
[00:02:36.180] - Gabriela Brunner
That's amazing because the world needs the magic that an ironing board provides. And I love this, because not everybody is going to be a CEO or an executive or a million-dollar guru entrepreneur. And that's okay, because that maybe isn't what's meant for you. So when you get up in the morning and you think, oh my God, I should be this stop. Stop right there.
[00:03:01.580] - Gabriela Brunner
Don't shoot all over yourself. In fact, I invite you to eliminate the word should from your vocabulary because it implies obligation and not coming from a sense of inner peace and knowing and wisdom and trust and security. So when you start thinking, I should do this, I should be a surfboard, I should have a more fun or interesting job, according to those people out there, society or whomever, just stop. Take a moment, take a breath, and center yourself and remind yourself that you are a beautiful creation, that you and your gifts are so meant to shine in this world and that we need you. We can't have a whole world of surfboards.
[00:03:40.410] - Gabriela Brunner
We can't have a whole world of CEOs that would be one bossy place. So we need all kinds of people, and we need you. So please, I encourage you, I implore you, don't ever feel bad about yourself if you're not doing what somebody else thinks you should do or even what somebody else is doing, because that may not be your path in life. That may not be what you are made to do, what you were born and put on this earth to do. So be a surfboard if that's what floats your boat.
[00:04:10.890] - Gabriela Brunner
Be an ironing board if that's what floats your boat. But figure it out. Take some time to figure it out, okay? Let me know what you want to be. I sometimes think I'd actually rather be an ironing board.
[00:04:22.370] - Gabriela Brunner
Way more useful and supportive and productive. And like my friend Bridget says, it serves as an ironing board and a coffee table if you set it up at the foot of your bed. And I'm also learning, too. Angle down, lose £10. Anyway, I'm so encouraged by all of you.
[00:04:36.900] - Gabriela Brunner
And just keep it up. Really keep it up. And don't be discouraged when you see something like that. Don't be discouraged when you see somebody saying, be a surfboard. Don't be a boring ironing board, because I want you to be a boring ironing board if that's what your soul is meant to be.
[00:04:53.620] - Gabriela Brunner
Because you can be so useful, you can be so creative, you can be so proactive when you step into your gifts and when you become the person that you were always meant to be. And we forget. That's the thing. So we don't have to figure out something new. We just have to remember who we are.
[00:05:08.170] - Gabriela Brunner
We just have to remember what we love to do. We just have to remember that we were born with these beautiful gifts. And every experience that we've had since that day that we were put on this earth has only been put in our path to enhance that, to bring us closer to having the courage and the confidence to really just shine with our authentic self. So that picture, that meme. That a surfboard.
[00:05:33.330] - Gabriela Brunner
An ironing board is just a boring surfboard. Not true. It is funny, though. I did laugh, and I shared it with some of my friends. So go ahead and figure out what you're meant to do in this life, and there's anything I can do to support you, please let me know.
